Without the conscious effort to capture a sense of beauty, the ordinary things in life become mundane.
An awesome book!
•June 26, 2011 • Leave a CommentI was lucky enough to have been gifted this little gem this evening, over some pub grub and a house red. It’s written and illustrated by Dallas Clayton- one of the most dazzling minds walking about. The person responsible for this little gift is one of the most incredible, beautiful and wild collection of atoms you could ever have the fortune of meeting. Awesome. X

Hej Hej
•May 25, 2011 • Leave a CommentIt’s been about a month since we’ve seen each other, and boy! SO much has happened!
1.
ECOCUBBY
BeateAdfectus + Lady Gowrie Child Care Centre + VICarts
I’ve started to work with ECO-CUBBY, a VICarts initiative to teach little people about sustainable building practices. You can find them here. Architects (or in my case , graduate of architecture), is teamed up with a school and together we design a cubby, where we can apply all the wonderful things we’ve learnt about sustainability. Having not taught little people before, I was a tad nervous of the 40 odd 4 year olds that greeted me on my first visit. We’ve read stories, conducted site visits, drawn some cool hero shots, and had some serious conversations about the world around us.
2.
KINO
We’re back onto it! Look out for KINO MELBOURNE which is set to launch around mid year 2011. It’s following on from the tradition of KINO Sydney, and KINO Adelaide. The general premise is to get non film makers and filmmakers alike to make films. The films can be about anything, but must follow the KINO guidelines. On the first Tuesday of each month we will have a screening of the films at Brolly Studios, on La Trobe Street in the city.
What else is there than just a bunch of films? We’re in the process of getting some local breweries on board at the moment. They’ll be weekly prizes, king and queen of shangpile island (more on this later) not to mention some yumyums for your after work tumtums….stay tuned….

NGV
I gotta job! Sadly it will change the wild studio-based life I’m leading at the moment- but I’m PRETTY silly excited about the whole thing!

HEIDE GALLERY OF MODERN ART
This project is still going, but has moved dates. Now in the WINTER school holidays, Beate Adfectus will be running a kids workshop on architecture at the Heide.
The title of the program is Empirical Adventures Through an Architectural Wonderland. Can;t say too much else about it right now, but if you got mini people about that need entertaining, come say hi!

PROCESS- June Edition
I’m in the process of getting together the list of speakers for this coming edition of PROCESS at LoopBar in Myers Pl.
The theme is Space Masters….
Typically architects are understood as jacks of all trades, masters of none. Happy in our chameleon guise, we flit through our days of space craft feeling at ease dodging specific question with rococo responses. This edition of process calls on masters of space craft from other disciplines, where they’ll share their stories of adventures through the wild frontiers of multiple dimensions.
Guest list yet to be confirmed
Come along on the 6th at around 6:30 for some drinks and a chit chat.
and lastly,
I hate it when the mentos packet pops at both ends…
Word of the day.
•April 26, 2011 • Leave a CommentPHANTASMAGORICAL
ORIGIN early 19th cent. (originally the name of a London exhibition (1802) of optical illusions produced chiefly by magic lantern): probably from French fantasmagorie, from fantasme ‘phantasm’ + a fanciful suffix.
Sydney sigh….
•March 13, 2011 • Leave a CommentI had the most wonderful drive through the city of Sydney today, over the harbor bridge to Mosman. FBI radio was blaring and in true Sydney style there’s not a cloud to be seen in the sky.
What made it extra special was the fact that only 3 hours earlier I was peering at Sydney from flight AC033 from Vancouver as it scooped over the harbour bridge and touched down at Sydney airport.
Sydney-ill let you in on a secret….
I’m missing you just a little bit. X
Snow is my Elixir
•March 9, 2011 • Leave a CommentI feel pretty fortunate to have grown up with an appreciation for the outdoors; especially the mountains and the snow. For the last week and a half the Woda clan have made the trek to Sun Peaks in BC Canada. Other than being an interesting experiment into family relations, the experience has reignited my itch for the grandmaster slides down the powdery sides of bowls and ridges.
3 more days left to go! …then back to Melbourne town…..
Paper Space
•March 8, 2011 • 2 CommentsA little while ago, a wonderful Melissa Pearson and I entered a poster competition. It was called Advertisements for Architecture (2011).
This is our statement about the poster.
“Man does come into the world with eyes, but only by slow education does he learn to see” – Walter Gropius.
We are all born with spatial imagination and awareness. There is a fabulous difference between the world that we create within the flatland of paper space, and the physical limitations of the real world beyond. All built form has the potential to give their inhabitants delight, comfort and joy. These are experiences that you can’t find in a line, but are drawn by an Architect in the knowledge of what the line will mean when the drawing on paper is transported into the third dimension.
The hero shot can sell an image. But this is not a pipe.
What makes architects so important?
An Architect knows the difference.
